She thought her eyes hurt because of dry eye and old age. No, it was because she had 27 (that is NOT a typo.... 27) contact lenses stuck to her eye.
Why hadn't someone noticed this? Apparently, she had ordered lenses online and hadn't been to the eye doctor in quite a while.
It was found when she went in for cataract surgery... which raises a question about the doctor who referred her for surgery, doesn't it?
How could she not know she had lost them? And how could she stand it?! (It makes me cringe and I don't even wear the things!)
